Tension grips the country as the nuclear talks with Iran start to go poorly. This is largely ignored by the populace, and the threat of war goes unheeded.
Blake has lived his life through hard work and his blog—Back Country J. He's an off-grid homesteader, blogger, and author. He has the life that preppers dream of, and he never knows it. As an on-again-off-again handyman, he learns how to fix everything in his life except loneliness, until he meets Sandra.
Sandra is an army veteran who has caught his attention, and she’s also the preacher's daughter. Sparks fly the first time they meet, and the shy hermit asks her out on a date.
Follow the couple as they try to survive raiders, hunger, and human nature when the balloon goes up after an EMP is set off.

I get this strange feeling that I'm one of the few non-preppers reviewing this book (maybe not, but it feels that way), but I wanted to write this to show that non-preppers like it, too.I thought the practical advice peppered throughout the book was interesting, but the characters and the voice of the author were what did it for me. Yes, there were grammatical and POV errors here and there, but nothing that stopped me for too long, and nothing that a quick edit couldn't fix. Getting an edit is easy. Writing a sincere, interesting story is NOT, and thankfully Boyd succeeded in doing that.
Throughout, the plot pulled me along, and as the end approached, I had a real hard time putting my kindle down. Overall, this first installment seems to me like its a realistic portrayal of what could happen both from a disaster and from a downfall of society standpoint. But I mostly like the way that a makeshift family builds around Blake and his simple, but honest nature. This story shows the bad that will probably come about if a disaster like this occurs, but it also shows the good.

The World Burns A PostApocalyptic Story eBook Boyd Craven III Holly Kothe Reviews
Great read. Finished at one setting. If this is the author's first book then he is off to an excellent career and I look forward to and will buy his next book. Character development was good and generally believable, detail level was pretty good and story line was good. This was a relatively short book but had none of the increasingly more common tricks to make it look longer (like adding spacing). More of a long short story than a book but well worth the ninety-nine cents. Would like to see more detail and length in his next book.
I have read all of Craven's 11 book series plus a couple of the additional ones like Rebel Radio and Good Fences and couldn't put them down !
I am scrambling to find more of his books. I have read so many apocalyptic books lately so I have experienced the ones where it was heavier on the more graphic portrayal of the violence and devastation but this series told the story without being too heavy handed with things. It was a smoother type reading but still had all the trials and deaths and struggles portrayed of the other EMP destruction stories and also had the personal and emotional struggles of the people expressed. You were able to travel along with them in their thoughts and see things they saw. You became attached to them and hung on the words to see what happened to them. So many people learning to find how tough and resilient they had to be to stay alive yet keep their humanity. So many horrible things happening and just how horrible some people can be when rules are not keeping them under control. I also loved some of the military strategy used especially by King and Michael and also at the farm. Having the center of it all being Blake and his farm and his Rebel Radio was a great way to draw in stories from other areas going through the devastation. It allowed the story to continue with multiple experiences. I wish the books continued on longer. It was hard to see them coming to an end. Thank you Mr Craven for a very enjoyable series of books to read and experience through your writing.
Really enjoyed this well written, true to form (that is if anything along these lines actually became a reality) with characters you can really relate to and likable as well. Entertaining and heart stopping, I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys this genre of a post apocalypse world where just remaining alive, having clean water, food and shelter will be hard for the masses (due to the plain, simple fact that the majority of people today rely on electric, their phones and computer's, grocery stores and fast food) and nobody would know the first thing about surviving or just staying alive-using a gun, hunting and foraging for food or worse case scenario, kill or be killed. On top of that, the horrible fact of people being the biggest threat of all, especially anyone whose disposition to violence and disrespect of authority would be a nightmare of utterly vast, endless horror. I really enjoyed this story, well done!!!
I didn't think I would give this novel a 5-star review when I first started reading it, but the story and characters seemed to become more interesting as the plot progressed. I especially liked the personality of Blake, and I haven't encountered many main characters like him in other books. The plot was plausible and the mix of dialog, action, and interesting information and insights was nicely balanced.
For readers who are concerned about things like sex and violence in novels (which I'm not), neither are graphically described in this book even though they are part of the plot. However, there are some good descriptions of creative defensive tactics and a nice romance along the way. For readers who don't care for excessive religious dogma, even though one character is a preacher and another is said preacher's daughter, there is none of that preachy stuff here that can be such a distraction in some otherwise decent stories.
The ending is good. Even though it's clear at the end that there can be more to the story, this novel stands on its own (even though it's relatively short) - none of that swindle where an author writes one story and then chops it into three e-books.
This one is well-done, and I look forward to reading more by Mr. Craven.
