I thought this was a great resource and a good glimpse into the economy of the wartime. By talking about and giving good reasons for using the foods she suggested and the substitutions she offered, she explained well how to save money in the kitchen and use everything you had. I also really liked the recipes in the back of the book and plan on trying some of them.

Though historically interesting, the content is pretty dated and not very useful for modern readers. It is interesting to see the differences in nutritional thinking that have developed since this book was written.
I purchased this book as a homeschool mom looking for a resource for a history lesson. My 9 year old daughter is an aspiring chef that just loves all things cooking. This was a real eye opener to her in the sense that she learned just how tough times were in that era. She also learned a great deal about how resourceful people had to be during that time.
Kind of written like advice on what to eat to get proper nutrition during times of need like war or disaster. Not bad information, allot of food information I'll bet many people don't know.
Mary's book seems oddly quaint and irrelevant to our present times of material abundanc. But only 70 years ago Hong Kong fell to the Japan Imperialist Occupiers for 42 months, people of this generation witnessed humanity striped of pride and decency, where basic necessities like eggs n rice were rationed through slips of paper. And determined who would live and who will starve to death. These time tested recipes have kept children interned in prison camps aliv, it will be mindful of us to watch and be ready when we will need to turn to it again.
It is an old book. I bought it because with all the storms and power-outages that seem to be happening, it may be necessary to know how to better handle food in shortage situations. It focuses on substituting due to the shortages of war-time, but still has good principals.

I remember my mother saying they had baked goods because my grandfather bought sugar on the black market during the war. This brings that time to life a bit.
